ZANTEL NICHOLS is a visiting assistant professor of speech communication in the Department of Communication Arts & Sciences. Nichols earned a Master of Arts degree in communication from TSU and a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of Iowa. She is completing her PhD in organizational communication at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL).

Her doctoral thesis is focused on grassroots nonprofit organizations and leadership. Her research interests include understanding resiliency in human service organizations, health disparities and behaviors among African-American students attending historically black colleges and universities, and understanding organizational structure and communication in community-building contexts.

Her academic appointments include serving as departmental athletic advisor for the UNL Department of Communication, basic course coordinator for the School of Communication at TSU and academic advisor for the School of Communication at TSU and graduate teaching assistant at UNL.
She co-published a textbook in business and professional communication and presented academic research in nonprofit leadership at national and local conferences. Professor Nichols received the 2011 Bruce Kendall Award for Excellence in Teaching Graduate Scholar Award from the UNL Department of Communication Studies. She also received the 2013 Departmental Faculty Teaching Award from TSU.
